Glass Work

Jacob's Ladder 9 metre high Sandblasted Glass Panel by Sally Scott, Leeds Minster
 'Jacob's Ladder' screen, Leeds Minster
In the exhibition the upstairs gallery of the Menier focused on Scott's architectural glass commissions, these span the UK and include 5 Cathedrals; Ripon, Leicester, St Albans, Llandaff and Norwich, the west doors of Westminster Abbey, and the Roman Catholic Shrine Church, Walsingham. Several were created in partnership with renowned glass engraver David Peace.

She produced the 'Jacob's Ladder' screen (left) for Leeds Minster in 1989, it is 9 metres high and at the time was the biggest piece of engraved glass commissioned in the UK since Coventry Cathedral in 1960s.

In the exhibition the work was displayed through film, full scale drawings, photographs and samples.

Sally is a fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers.

A new book about Sally’s glass work was launched during the exhibition. 'My Grandmother's Glass and Me' by Lily Guy-Vogel
The book follows the journey of Sally Scott and her granddaughter Lily as they visit all 48 sites of Sally's glass in public ecclesiastical buildings.

Glass Discs

Moon Lily Sandblasted Blue Glass Disc by Sally Scott
'Moon Lily'  c.2001
Sally Scott has also worked on many smaller scale glass projects, including this range of stunning glass discs. These were produced as exhibition pieces, particularly to show with the Guild of Glass Engravers.

Each disc is between 55 - 75cm in diametre, they are hand made with flash glass by Neil Wilkin. This is a technique which fuses two layers of  coloured glass together, Scott sandblasts into one of the layers to remove the colour and create the image.

One of the discs 'Rajasthan' was made by Scott after a trip to that area of India in 1997, it is currently in the collection of the Birmingham Museum

Paintings on steel

Swimmer Sandblasted Aluminium by Sally Scott
'Swimmer'  Sandblasted Steel, 1972
In the 1970s Sally began to experiment with innovative techniques of sandblasting and painting on metal, aluminium and stainless steel, this led her into the glass work. Some of these pivotal works are in the show.

These represent a small but very important stage in Sally Scott's career and are much sort after; a very small number will be for sale in the exhibition
